Curriculum & Activities

What is taught at NSIEC?

Our school implements the Intensive English Programs (IEP) Curriculum Framework, a text-based approach for explicitly teaching English through key learning/subject areas. Our timetable looks similar to that of a mainstream secondary school, with a range of subjects such as English, Maths, Science, HSIE, CAPA, Physical Education and ICT which are taught with a strong language focus. Some external programs are also available to students, such as the Department of Education Swimming and Water Safety Program, STARTTS Soccer Leadership Program for students from a refugee background and the Multicultural Playwright Program. Each term, students are taken on excursions to consolidate their learning.

The IEP Curriculum Framework has four levels of language development, with one term needed for each. Our students are enrolled at the IEC for two to four terms depending on their level of English upon arrival. After graduating from NSIEC, students transition to their local high schools.

For more information about IECs, you can download the Intensive English Centre Guide here: Intensive English centre guide (DOC 109KB).
